Here's the actual shape of a session. We meet about an hour before sunset. We walk. I ask you questions you'll forget I asked, because you're busy answering them. Every so often I'll put you somewhere specific and give you something small to do — walk toward that light, tell her the thing you said in the car. Then I get out of the way.

The photos people end up printing are almost never the ones where you're looking at the camera. They're the half-second after, when one of you cracks. That's the part I'm waiting for.

Before You Ask

The real questions.

What do we wear?

Something you already own and already feel good in. If you're pulling at it, it'll show in every frame. Beyond that: coordinate, don't match — one of you in a solid, the other in a soft pattern works almost every time. Skip big logos and neon, they'll pull the eye. And bring a second option; we can swap halfway through on the hour-long sessions.

What if we're awkward in front of a camera?

Everyone is, for about the first ten minutes. That's why the sessions start with walking instead of posing — it gives you something to do while you forget I'm there. I've never had a couple stay stiff the whole time, and the first ten minutes aren't the photos you're paying for anyway.

Where do we shoot?

Some favourites: the lake boardwalks in Woodbridge, the bluffs at Crystal Cove, Old Towne Orange for something warmer and more urban, and a handful of quiet residential streets that go gold about twenty minutes before sunset. I'll suggest two or three based on the look you're after.

Can we pick our own location?

Absolutely, and I'd rather you did if somewhere means something to you — where you met, the trail you walk, your own back yard. Personal always beats scenic. If it's more than about 30 minutes out of Orange County I'll quote travel first so there's no surprise.

How fast do we get the photos?

Five to seven days for the full gallery. Both the hour and two-hour sessions include a handful of edited favourites within 48 hours, so you have something to post while the rest is still coming.

What if it rains, or something comes up?

Reschedule free with 24 hours' notice, weather included. Overcast days are genuinely good for this — soft light, no squinting — so I'll usually suggest we shoot anyway unless it's actually pouring.
